Formula Student racing car of the DART-Racing Team with rotational speed sensors from RHEINTACHO

The TU Darmstadt Racing Team e.V. association, or “DART Racing” for short, is a university group of the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt) run entirely by students that independently designs and constructs a one-seater racing car every year. It then puts it to the test in a racing competition against other universities.

This season there are currently around 40 students working together, including those from the departments of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and industrial engineering. The team’s goal each season is to compete in the international university design competition called “Formula Student”. This is a student competition in which teams from different universities around the world compete against each other in static and dynamic disciplines. What is special about this competition is that, in the end, the winner is not necessarily the team with the fastest car, but the team with the best overall package.

To ensure that this racing car can successfully compete every season, important foundations are laid throughout the structured development and design stage process. The project implementation and the realisation of innovative ideas in particular, are only possible, with the support of industry and research partners such as RHEINTACHO, however.

The 2-channel differential-hall rotational speed sensors of the FE Push-Pull series, which RHEINTACHO provided to the DART Racing Team, are used for the accurate measurement of wheel speed. For this, a sensor is installed in each wheel carrier, which serves to connect the wheel to the rest of vehicle’s chassis.

The accurate measurement of the wheel speed plays a particularly important part because it is of major importance as an input signal for the traction control system. This in turn ensures that the tyres can transfer the maximum power and the car can thus accelerate as fast as possible.
